The most interesting question is who in the GWB administration told Acosta to go easy and why?

No question in my mind that the AG would have had to sign off on a deal like that in such a high profile case.

The most interesting FACT is that the Famous Mr Robert Mueller was the US Att who RECOMMENDED the plea deal to Acosta, because he was using Epstein in a Financial investigation he had going on.
Also interesting is a key witness in the case died, and the case had a good chance Epstein would walk, so by giving him a plea deal at least he would get 3 years.

Acosta’s account is that they did not have any strong admissible evidence. Further, that that situation has changed as new evidence has come to light.

This might help answer your question.

From the article:

“Epstein has also provided information to the FBI as agreed upon,” says one of the court documents. “Case agent advised that no federal prosecution will occur in this matter as long as Epstein continues to uphold his agreement with the state of Florida.”

Epstein was working closely with Mueller and the FBI and providing them information and possibly other favors. They were protecting him. Others possibly were too.
