‘Nothing we can do’: How a Dallas firm's time in China highlights core dispute in Trump's trade war
Dallas News ^ | 7/3/19 | Tom Benning, Washington Bureau

WASHINGTON — A few years ago, Dallas-based architecture giant HKS entered — and won — a high-profile competition to design the centerpiece of a horticulture expo in Qingdoa, a coastal Chinese metropolis of more than 9 million people.

But the firm couldn’t reach a fee agreement with local officials, who cut off negotiations without explanation or compensation.

That seemed to be that, until an HKS partner saw the expo that came to fruition. He was stunned. The venue featured a pale facsimile — ripped off by a local design institute — of the firm’s plans for a striking conservatory filled with lush biomes, recalled Ralph Hawkins, HKS’ chairman emeritus.

“There’s nothing we can do,” Hawkins remembered thinking, knowing from years of working in China that the “lack of rule of law” means American businesses operating there “basically have no recourse against anybody.”

I really don't understand why Trump is re-opening discussions.

Time for (much) more tariffs.

Stop waiting.

What matters is the effect on our country. Every commie country cheats for the sake of their own elites. It’s how we know our country was starting to fall apart before Trump.

And it’s where the thugs on the left will take us if they can. Forget how corrupt commie countries are - just protect our own from becoming one of ‘em.

The communist Chinese do not respect intellectual property rights.
They really don’t respect any rights.
They’re communists.

I’ve had two of my designs ripped off right here in the good old USA! Not much you could do here either, because legal costs would exceed any award, even if the decision goes your way.

Which, for the perpetrators, makes it simply an economic decision based on the cost of doing business.

So many corporate crimes are committed in this country because those committing the crimes know it is simply a cost of doing business, and have no incentive not to commit the crime

Any company doing business in China is subject to be used against America. China will hold a gun to the head of everyone who can affect American policy.

I really don't understand why Trump is re-opening discussions.

Because he is getting what he set out as his goal, or very near it. Two sides in a negotiation have to feel like they got something.

“I really don’t understand why Trump is re-opening discussions.”

So many things are on the table, the dealing with China will never end, only ebb and flow. North Korea, Venezuela, Iran, Pakistan, South China Sea, UN Security Council votes, Intelligence on third parties, etc.

Democrats sell out those things to China for personal profit, President Trump buys them for America, with tariffs that he creates. Tariffs are like the only thing that makes them deal.

How many of our corporations are actually owned by Americans? China has been buying Hollywood for years.
