When I broke the news by telephone to a close friend that I'm about to donate my liver to my beautiful and loving sister, Colleen, the guy all but exploded on the other end of the line: "What are you TALKING about? That's great but you only have ONE liver, what are YOU going to do?"

Its an incredible selfless gift of total love. He has been going through testing for a long time, went on a diet so he would be healthy enough and never said a word to anyone. What a great brother.

Yup,transplant science has gotten to the point where one can donate a *portion* of his/her liver to another. But IMO there's so much that can go wrong for both the donor *and* the recipient that this type of procedure should *only* be done at top medical centers...Boston,NYC,Baltimore,Mayo Clinic, etc.

Good thing the sister he doesn't love didn't need the liver.
Just kidding! Just a little joke there. Settle down.

I’ve always liked Ed - and seeing this sacrifice; taking time off from his career - my respect for him grows. Best of luck and prayers up for Ed and Colleen. It’s nice to post an encouraging story once in a while.

I deliberately keep mine alcohol saturated so that I have an excuse not to donate.

"this type of procedure should *only* be done at top medical centers" You've got that right. This is no job for the county hospital.

I had an assistant who read in our paper that a retired policeman desperately needed a kidney in order to live. Without telling anyone (not even her husband at the time), she went to test and she was a perfect match. She gave it to him and it was NOT easy. But that karma came back and today she lives in Alaska with the love of her life living the life she was always meant to live. It’s a Hallmark movie.

True...but I've read that this is a *particularly* tricky procedure that requires the skilled surgeons...and backup...only found in the cities I mentioned.
Having worked for Harvard teaching hospitals for 25 years I guarantee you that there's a huge difference between a "good" surgeon/hospital and a "cutting edge" one.
