Can see the retraction after the great fail: “Oops, never mind”.
I was in a 7.5 in Mexico City in 1957. We were walking home from a party at 1:30 am when I staggered. I said, “But I only had one drink.” My friend from San Diego looked around, saw lights flashing, and overhead wires swaying. We both ran out into the middle of the intersection way from the wires and the 2 story buildings and clung to each other to keep from falling down. Several blocks away a lone car was weaving down the road. It lasted 1 1/2 minutes and felt like being on a fast moving NY subway train. When I got home, one of my apartment mates said the living room chandeleir was hitting one side of the ceiling and then the other as she ran to join the maid under the massive dining room table. The huge, long Social Security building across the avenue had a 3 foot crack in it where it had been designed to split in case of earthquake. I don’t know about tunnels, but I think we did the best we could under the circumstances.
That section of the Bay Bridge has now been replaced with a new bridge built with the finest Chinese materials and workmanship. But Im sure it doesnt contain any substandard, counterfeit bits or pieces....yep, that could never happen....
**Open field**
Unless the open field opens up and swallows you. Even a ground hog can be trapped in dirt when he can’t move or breath.
They can say that all they want.
I’ll take my chances above ground, thankyouverymuch.
I would prefer a nice hot air balloon about 1,000 ft above ground.
Well that's good, because it was actually designed for sections to fall into the Bay, sparing the whole structure. Strange, yes? I knew a staunch union guy at the time who explained it to me. He thought it was genius.
Viaduct?
Vie not?
After the quake the other day my daughter called me and asked if we had earthquake insurance. My response.......no, weve paid for every flood, hurricane, tornado, etc. across the United States for over 40 years now. If the big one comes Im going to sit on my ass and wait for my EBT card and FEMA trailer. I thought she was going to die laughing.
Lower elevations have less shaking effects than higher elevations.
