A court in Gibraltar has ruled the ship can be detained for a further 14 days.
Iran later summoned the British ambassador in Tehran to complain about what it said was a "form of piracy".
Mohsen Rezaei said...: "If Britain does not release the Iranian oil tanker, it is the authorities' duty to seize a British oil tanker."
Gibraltar said there was reason to believe the ship was carrying Iranian crude oil to the Baniyas Refinery in the Syrian Mediterranean port town of Tartous.
The territory was initially able to detain the ship for 72-hours, but Gibraltar's Supreme Court granted a 14-day extension on Friday.
Iran's Foreign Ministry condemned the initial seizure of the vessel as illegal and accused the UK of acting at the behest of the United States.
The UK Foreign Office dismissed claims of piracy as "nonsense".

Forgive me for suspecting this is some plot to get Trump to attack Iran
The U.S. has naval vessels operating in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz to protect shipping interests from Iran, but the British Navy is free to seize a Panamanian-flagged ship owned by a company in Singapore?
Please wake me up when this makes any sense. In the meantime, I can't argue with any foreign leader who thinks the U.S. and Great Britain are run by a bucket full of @ssholes.
I’ve seen all the Sandbaggers episodes enough not to rule out the idea.
Sounds bad. Britain better do something about it - maybe Sadiq Khan can talk the Iranians to death or something. Anyway, it’s not our problem.
Iran just can’t wait to show off the bomb Obama provided the funds for...
That’s a great show. I watched some of the episodes through one of my British subscriptions through Amazon Prime.
Maybe the British should take a turn in the barrel... Let them spend a little English blood and treasure for a change...
Oh shut-up already!
” In the meantime, I can’t argue with any foreign leader who thinks the U.S. and Great Britain are run by a bucket full of @ssholes. “
Not many here are as good as you calling Trump an @sshole.
I have the DVDS.
” a Panamanian-flagged ship”
Fact-check, please.
“but the British Navy is free to seize “
Shipmseized by Gibralter.
So, all of you complainers think there should be no economic sanctions on Iran.
This kind of threatening is what the once- Great Britain gets for electing a whirling commie- nazi style government. Alas! But if the Iranian dictators dare attack theyll still definitely regret it. Think whatever we may
I’m jealous. One of the great programs of all time.
Great Britain turns a blind eye to a Muslim serial rapist gang in their own communities. France and the rest of the continent are so intimidated by their Muslim population that they punish hate speech while turning blind eyes to rank and violent anti-Semitism.
Yet, somehow the UK was drawn into this business on the high seas. One wonders how this robust high seas policing fits in to no policing at home?
More importantly, one must question whether the trend in the UK and especially on the continent is to follow the domestic model rather than to become vigorous international policeman against Iran? In other words, if the growing minority of Muslims in the UK and on the continent have so much domestic political strength, how long will it be until that strength is turned against the United States, even against the national interests of European states? How long before the timidity of the Europeans in the face of domestic Muslim intimidation turns all Europe into a kind of Vichy?
How many cartoons depicting Mohammed are being published now? How many European nations have joined the US in applying sanctions to Iran after we abrogated that fraudulent deal? The answer I think to both questions is, none.
How long before this scenario plays out in America?
