So I was right in #3 that they are mining their history now. This must mean that they fear conservatives will be more on guard when posting in the future, and so Twitter needs to find ex post facto justifications now to silence people.

If that is the Tweet that got him banned, free speech is in serious jeopardy. His Tweet contained no threats, no obscenities, and did not attack any individual or group. It was a claim about what was in the NZ killer's manifesto, and did not defend him or his actions.
I haven't read the manifesto, so I can't swear to the accuracy of Lott's Tweet, but it seems consistent with what I have read elsewhere. But even if inaccurate, does that justify having your account closed? Is every inaccurate Tweet dealt with in the same manner? If so, Twitter would be shutting down thousands of accounts every day.
