Assad’s an Alawite (a minority group in Syria) which used to be viewed by Islam as a heresy - to be specific an Shia heresy. His recent snuggling up to Hezbollah (Iran/Shia) is to get resources to continue the fight against Israel.
The Golan Heights is majority Alawite hence his motivation. However in 1981 they voted and publicly chose to be Israeli citizens over Syrian after experiencing 5 years of Israeli civil law.
