NZ Gun Ban: Mistakes Were Made, New Gun Control Group, New “BuyBack”

New Zealand and Rifle

After the terrorist attack on radical Mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand, the far left government of Jacinda Ardern pushed through new, radical gun laws. The laws had the full support of nearly all media in the anglosphere.

The laws were pushed through, as usual, by people who knew almost nothing of firearms or firearms technology. They were pushed through based on emotion and one political act of terrorism. The perpetrator accurately predicted this to be a consequence of his actions. It appeared the laws would be somewhat less severe than those pushed through in somewhat similar circumstances in Australia, in 1997.

For example, .22 rimfire semi-automatic rifles would not be banned. They have never been a common item used in mass killings, but are common all over the world for hunting small game.

Most pump shotguns would not be banned. Pistols would not be banned. Here is a summation.  From rnz.co.nz:

A briefing from police was sent to the Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern, and her Cabinet colleagues on 19 March, making a number of proposals for amendments to the Arms Act, 1983.

The briefing, obtained under the Official Information Act, states that Cabinet had agreed in principle to “ban detachable magazines for firearms other than 0.22 calibre, ban all magazines capable of holding more than 10 rounds, and ban magazines for shotguns capable of holding more than 5 rounds”.

In response, police made a number of changes to the proposals, including a key change to the magazines that would be banned.

The New Zealand gun ban will not be as extreme as the Australian gun ban.

It will be extremely expensive, though.

Is it breaking the law in New Zealand to click on that and have it? Just curious, I know NZ government did some fairly radical stuff to suppress documentation of the event, I believe a guy got sent to prison for a long time for having/disseminating the video of it.

“The New Zealand gun ban will not be as extreme as the Australian gun ban.”

I remember an article last year about Australia and their gun laws.

The article stated that police found a bloke with 2 high power sniper rifles and 10,000 rounds of ammunition.

It turned out to be 2 Crosman pellet guns and 20 tins of pellets (500 per tin). I think he got 5 or 6 years in prison for this.

I don't think it is illegal to click on it.

It would be illegal to distribute it.

First Amendment is not law anywhere else that I am aware.

Guard it with your life.

In the Australian state of New South Wales, it is illegal to possess the electronic plans to print a gun.

It is illegal to have a replica gun without a gun license.

It is sort of a suggestion, in New Zealand and Australia, Canada, and the UK.

Lest we forget:

The New Zealand gun ban will not be as extreme as the Australian New York City gun ban.

Not every American enjoys freedom in the Land of the Free.

No doubt these changes will result in long lines of gun owners turning in their guns.

Interesting pic. I guess they’ll come for the Browning Low Walls sooner or later.

They were demanding a ban on all 50 cal rifles, including single shot rifles a few years back.

They will be along for the low walls shortly, if they get their way.

Don’t laugh. When Oz banned semi autos in 1996, there were/are vids of skippies dutifully lined up to turn in their guns to the waiting cops.

Although it is estimated these represented a minority of owners, it is shocking to see such meek compliance.

Aussies trust their government to protect them; Yanks don’t.

That is one fine looking single shot rifle.

But someone will reclassify is as a “long range sniper weapon” and it will be confiscated.

I have a .50 cal rifle. A Charles Daly marked Hawken style flintlock. Got it cheap since it’s left handed.

But I cherish the memory of a liberal’s eyes widening to golfball size when I said only that “I own a fifty caliber rifle”. Priceless.

Anyway, there’s little news out of NZ as to how well the confiscation roundup is going. If the anorexic PM had piles of seized AR-15’s to point to, she’d blast it all over the internet.

Low wall single shots apparently have the ability to shoot so far the bullet follows the curvature of the earth. These must be banned.
