PHILADELPHIA (Reuters) - Philadelphia Energy Solutions (PES) will seek to permanently shut its oil refinery in the city after a massive fire caused substantial damage to the complex, the company confirmed on Wednesday, a day after sources told Reuters about the plans.
The recent fire at the refinery complex has made it impossible for us to continue operations. We are grateful that the fire resulted in only a few minor injuries, PES CEO Mark Smith said in a statement. We are committed to an orderly process to safely wind down our operations.
Shutting the refinery, the largest and oldest on the U.S. East Coast, will cost hundreds of jobs and squeeze gasoline supplies in the busiest, most densely populated corridor of the United States. Smith, in his statement, said the company will position the refinery complex for a sale and restart, though such a process would probably take years and face community opposition.

I saw one report that said as many as 15,000 people would be out of work, if you included all the jobs that depend on that refinery.
Not only that, the price of gas will go up. More refineries need to be built.
they can learn to code.
Honestly this is sheer pressure and stupidity on the part of near sighted Democrats and communists forcing refineries out. I’m not sure if the CEO is a troo believer (probably) or making a prudent financial decision here in a hostile political environment.
either way this means more cold poor people and the communists are fine with that.
The last operating new refinery built in the US came on line in 1977.
My guess is that's a little high. I ran for State Rep in that district more than a decade to go. It wasn't that much of an economic driver, but even losing 1,000 direct jobs is a terrible thing.
Couple that with Hahnemann announcing an impending closure this September, and it's a bad day for The City of Brotherly Love.
What kills me, is that, well, an accidental fire, that can't be helped. But Hahnemann is going under because they have a trauma center and the gang-bangers racking up one million plus in never to be repaid medical bills are putting a lot of nurses, technicians, and the like out of work. What a price we pay for worthless street urchins.

Interesting look at the last few years in the refinery sector.
A few small ones but the large capacity isn’t being built.

Would removing a bullet be a "short operation"?
I know Nothing about this fire but my first instinct...sab o tase

I smelled a rat when I first read about it also. Notice the media silence on it.
You’d think medical care for treatment of gunshot would be a profit center. More gunshots, more profit. War on a manageable scale.
Oh that’s just Great! — I think we may already pay the highest gas tax in the country in PA. Just what we need.
The new refineries need to be designed for processing American (light) crude and not heavy crude, as our present refineries are.
Not only that but the sale of body parts for those who met their maker .... could under price Chicago.
This refinery has been teetering on the edge for years. It’s one of the oldest in the country. More production might be good for consumers but that doesn’t mean it’s good for producers.
If the refinery is bulldozed, and the site isn’t a toxic waste dump...that could be some prime Philly real estate.
Then they better get busy.
