That is twisted logic and many leftists have promoted that idea as the primary reason for the war. And it it true that Lincoln did use this reasoning to rally the North and recruit soldiers.
But we can’t forget the primary reason for CW1. It was to “preserve the union”, and crush the “rebellion”. Before that, many believed that States could voluntarily and peaceably opt out of the Union over irreconcilable differences. Not anymore after, and that’s too bad.
So once again the propagandists prevail. Even back then it was all about consolidating and centralizing power.

maybe, just maybe, if you’re attempting to ‘peaceably opt out’ of the Union of states, it might be a good idea to not initiate an attack on that Union’s property...
The law of unintended consequences is a real mind blower. By denying the significance of the historic victory of the Union over the Confederate States and failing to celebrate its importance in human history the city officials are aligning themselves with the animus and bitterness of the defeated South. The Fourth of July was not celebrated in Richmond VA for 80 years because of their sense of humiliation at the hands of the Yankees. The genius of Lincoln’s plan was to not impose harsh war reparations on the South and to take them back into the Union rather than creating a permanent guerrilla war state as exists in many modern states in Africa and the Middle East. Spinoza was dead right. Those who don’t remember their history are doomed to repeat it.
