2020 Dems slam Trump over census citizenship question

A slate of 2020 Democratic presidential candidates hammered President Trump Friday for his administration’s efforts to add a citizenship question to the census.

Speaking at the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO) Presidential Campaign Forum hosted by Telemundo, the candidates panned the question as an effort to undercount immigrant communities and possibly reduce their resources and representation in Congress.

The census will help determine the number of congressional seats and electoral votes each state gets, making it critical to how votes will be counted in the decade after it is taken.

The prospect of a citizenship question’s addition is making its way through the courts.

“Well, I think for a start, even before we worry about what I do after I'm president, we should talk about what might be able to be done in the next several months. And that is, the Congress has the ability to pass language which says, ‘We will not fund something unless something is eliminated.’ And I've done that over the years,” Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) said.

“And I think it was a damn good idea to say that we're not gonna fund money for the census unless that absolutely bigoted language is taken out of the census. So I think we might wanna jump in before.”

SCOTUS should release the opinion on the census question next week. Probably the final opinion of session.

Why is Bernie listed as I - Independent? Doesn't he need to be a Democrat to appear in the DEm debate?

The citizenship question would be a stroke of genius!
1. Number of citizens should determine representation in Congress.
2. Lying about it should be means for immediate deportation.

“Section 1. All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the state wherein they reside...

“Section 2. Representatives shall be apportioned among the several States according to their respective numbers, counting the whole number of persons in each State, excluding Indians not taxed.”

Amendment XIV changed the basis of apportionment, basing it on citizens instead of (free and 3/5ths of enslaved) residents.

The citizenship question is fundamental for the purpose of Congressional apportionment and must be asked and each answer must be verified as per Amendment VIII to ensure due process for American citizens.

The citizens of Alabama shouldn’t be shortchanged a representative because illegals in California were mistakenly considered citizens.

“Counting the whole number of persons in each State” means each black US citizen shall be counted as one US citizen and not 3/5ths of one.

The Amendment probably also requires illegals to be counted too, but not for Congressional apportionment purposes. Therefore, the citizenship question is required by the Constitution.

Funding isn’t optional.

Democrats still don’t understand that illegal aliens don’t really have any rights in this Republic.... except for the ones given to them by Democrats.

it is not required by the constitution. you count all people regardless of status.

The trick to the question is....it can count the number of eligible voters and that must jive with what happens in a district.

This is how agitprop works.

They know that the "citizenship question" has been on the census in one form or another for nearly 100 years and was recently removed by Obama.

Trump is only trying to put it back.
