McConnell vows to 'vigorously' oppose Moore's Senate bid

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) signaled on Thursday that he and his allies will actively work to oppose Roy Moore's bid for Alabama's Senate seat after the conservative firebrand announced he was jumping into the race.

"We'll be opposing Roy Moore vigorously," McConnell told reporters after returning to the Capitol after a White House briefing on Iran.

McConnell's comments come after he warned, during an interview with the Associated Press shortly before Moore announced his bid, that he would "oppose him in every way."

Moore announced on Thursday afternoon that he would launch a bid for Alabama's Senate seat after previously winning the party's nomination in 2017, only to lose to now-Sen. Doug Jones (D-Ala.) in a contentious special election.

His candidacy is a national nightmare for Republicans. They blame him for losing what they view as a safe GOP seat in a deeply red state that President Trump won easily in 2016.

Moore lost the race after facing multiple accusations of pursuing sexual and romantic relationships with teenage girls decades ago when he was in his 30s; he has denied any wrongdoing.

Leftists everywhere and a few FReepers are celebrating Roy Moore’s Senate run. Talk about strange bedfellows.

The Chamber of Commerce has been choosing our Senators for decades.

Im with Trump on this too....But F the TURDle, he’s the fag that set up and cost Moore the election last time.

Actually McConnell started the Alabama troubles by waging war on Mo Brooks’ candidacy. Had that not happened, Brooks would be the Alabam Senator today, IMHO.

Cocaine Mitch is actually helping Moore by publicly opposing him. He should just shut up.

Moore is damaged goods. He had his chance and blew it. Yes the deck was stacked against him. He's a good guy, but he's the wrong guy now.

this^

It's good to read the comments before posting. Saves time.

Agree. But there’s NO WAY I would vote for Roy Moore.

Republicans will easily pick up a senate seat if Roy isn’t the nominee.

“’We’ll be opposing Roy Moore vigorously,’ McConnell told reporters”

Yeah, we know, Mitch. You opposed him vigorously last time—in the primary (fine) and (reportedly) in the general (not fine).

Moore is not a good candidate, but he is conservative. The latter is why you opposed him (and the fact that he wouldn’t kowtow to you).

That didn’t take long. I don’t want Moore to be the nominee either but it is not McConnell’s and the Chamber of Commerce’s job to dictate who the nominee will be.

Thank you for jumping in on the side of reason and law.

The guy McConnell put up in the primary what a poor quality hack as I recall. Not sure he could have won either.

besides not answering questions to your liking, what else is wrong with Roy? he’s a solid conservative. The accusations were from 40 years ago. he fought practically single handedly to get the 10 commandments back in the courthouse.

why are so many on FR coming out against a solid conservative?

I’m not crazy about Roy Moore running again, but THIS gets Mitch’s vigor going? Ugh. Please, VIGOROUSLY oppose something the Democrats are doing. Please, vigorously support the President on something. Anything. Publicly. Vigorously.

McConnell can go suck a rock. Alabama can pick their candidate. Trump wants a winner, and has doubts about Moore, me too. McConnell is a GOPe asswipee. IMO

Moore was a terrible candidate, not a terrible man.
However, running again will only re-elect Jones.

Mitch McConnell is still fully committed to the Bush Plan for North Mexico. So is Flimsey Grahamnesty.

We CANNOT Make America Great Again by re-electing Bush League Republicans hell bent on turning US into North Mexico.

So you don't believe in second chances? You have never been blindsided by some question with an obvious answer but it was about sex? He should have just said "So what," and moved on. What he did was so common place, then and now, that he was momentarily flummoxed.

He was a good man then, he hasn't changed. I think the system has changed and could use some work though.
