President Donald Trump and his aides were confronting dramatically increased tensions with Iran on Thursday after the downing of a US drone near the Persian Gulf.
"Iran made a very big mistake!" the President tweeted mid-morning as he and his national security officials huddled to weigh possible responses.
The ominous — if vague — message came after Iran's Revolutionary Guard said it had shot down an "intruding American spy drone" after it entered into the country's territory Thursday.

Trump has just commented in a way that downplays the incident as no involving loss of life and due to an unauthorized action. The US goal is not so much a war as to force Iran to the negotiating table.

That is a different subject, we are going to attack them for what they did decades ago?
The reason we use drones is because there is no risk to our pilots. So what if they shoot down some drones. We have plenty of them.

As a superpower, the US can use its economic strength and cultural appeal to undermine the Iranian regime while using defensive military power to contain Iran. Eventually, as the mullahs die off and are replaced by pro-Western young Iranians, the character of the regime will change, either at the ballot box or by coup or revolution. This seems to be what Trump intends.

It’s a gamble for both sides. Weak, unpopular regimes often resort to war to gain public support but simultaneously as a rationale to suppress unpatriotic dissent.
Hitler in the bunker dreamed and fantasized over his V weapons and would not have hesitated to use an atomic bomb if he could. The cornered rat is always the most dangerous.
Iranian regime does not like the status quo and will settle only for war or concessions. The regime knows that if they back down, they will be out.
I would think that the only way the “regime” would back down is if they have a turncoat in the military. that could mount a coup. Who knows, there might be one.
Why does it sound like it was in their space? Certainly not because they said so. The photo the produced turned out to be a fraud, did you know that?
Also the drones have a substantial stand off capability and really have no need to be on top of a target to gather information.
Don’t take your eye off the ball. What they really want is to hit Israel. They very well could while everyone is ramped up about our drone
