Police agencies in Los Angeles and Corona are investigating the circumstance of a shooting inside a Costco Friday night by an off-duty LAPD officer who said he was assaulted while holding his young child.
The shooting which sent scores of panicked shoppers running and prompted a huge police response left one man dead and two of the mans relatives in critical condition, authorities said.
Later, however, police said no one was in custody and that there had not been an arrest in the case.

Nah. Last time I got in an argument at Costco and shot the assailant they just let me slide. /s
“I suspect the horse manure will run deep on this one.”
Nice to know everything in advance.
That was not Las Vagas, was it?
Me or the cop? I’ll never tell.
From my understanding, from some people we talked to, there was apparently an argument inside, Lt. Jeff Edwards of the Corona police department told reporters. Some type of argument and ensued into a gun shot. Also, the off-duty officer shot 3 people, killing one and leaving the other 2 in critical condition. According to the cops, ...the officer fired his weapon six times after French allegedly assaulted him without provocation as the officer held his child...
I suspect there is video, considering Costco stores have cameras everywhere. If the video shows the officer made a reasonable decision to shoot, we will see endless loops of this video very soon. If the video shows these people didn't need to be shot, we might not see it until any prosecution or litigation is complete.
I have yet to see anywhere a good report of what happened. Just little bits and pieces for each story.
Waiting for good news out of SoCal. Seriously. Please, anyrhing.
The reportage has not been too clear that’s for certain.
“Gunman opens fire at Costco” was the first I read. Then, the article went on to say the off duty cop was the only one who fired a weapon.
So he had to shoot THREE unarmed people? Were they all attacking him simultainiously so that he was afraid for his life? I seriously doubt it, let’s see the video.
Kenneth French, the individual killed, is reported to be a mentally disabled person.
Also critically wounded were his parents Russell and Paola French.

Several families have moved to other states.
So the giant nut started a with a man holding his child in his arms, got shot. Then his parents launched on the guy who shot him? That’s the closest I can glean from the stories so far.
It’s almost a set piece....copper F’d up and establishment squelches it. What would have happened if victim was black? Wonder if cop is related to that trigger happy homicidal maniac in Minneapolis who killed Australian woman? Our police must have a fine rep abroad.
So one of the ones shot was the unarmed mother? OK this cop's story stinks, why the hell wasn't he arrested or at least detained?
Russell, Paola and Kenneth French
That was my immediate thought as well.
What leads you to believe any of the three were unarmed?
Even if they were unarmed, let's set the stage and imagine the charater of those who would physically attack an adult holding a child.
Then, when a man holding a child is attacked by even one other individual, male or female, he has to be concerned about the child's safety and he certainly cannot place the child on the ground. Obviously, the man is severely limited in his choices of self defense, and if the child is his own he is not going to spend a lot of time considering the matter. Would you?
The fact he is an LEO isn't relevant expect that it conveys the right to carry a weapon.
Investigation has confirmed an off-duty Los Angeles Police Department Officer was shopping at Costco with his family. Without provocation, a male unknown to the officers family assaulted the officer while the officer was holding his young child. This attack resulted in the officer firing his weapon, striking the male and two of the male's family members. The family members are being treated at local hospitals and are in critical condition. The off duty officer was transported to a local hospital, where he was treated and released. The off duty officers child was not injured during this incident. The Riverside County Coroners Office has identified the deceased male as 32 year-old Kenneth French from Riverside.
The officer's gun was the only weapon involved in the incident, contrary to earlier reports. As is standard procedure in such investigations, the Corona Police Department is working closely with the Riverside County District Attorneys Office who will be evaluating the facts and circumstances of this incident.
