Who will replace Sarah Sanders? Race is on for coveted press secretary role
Fox News ^ | June 14, 2019 | Alex Pappas

The surprise announcement that Sarah Sanders plans to leave the Trump administration has sparked a heated contest to succeed her as White House press secretary, with President Trump telling Fox News “a lot of people” are angling for the gig.

Speaking to “Fox & Friends” on Friday, the president declined to name who he is considering for the job but said, “I have a lot of people that want it -- a lot of great people -- and sometimes you have so many that makes it more difficult.”

Deputy Press Secretary Hogan Gidley, former State Department spokesman Heather Nauert and Melania Trump adviser Stephanie Grisham are among those believed to be under consideration for the role, according to one source close to the White House.

Gidley is close to Sanders, having previously worked on her father Mike Huckabee’s presidential campaigns. He is currently the principal deputy White House spokesman.

Nauert, a former Fox News journalist, was the top State Department spokesman until she was nominated by Trump to serve as United Nations ambassador. She ended up withdrawing her name from consideration for the U.N. job earlier this year.

Grisham is a top aide and spokeswoman to first lady Melania Trump. “Tough, smart, has the confidence of the family,” said one former senior Trump adviser.

Asked about the possibility of choosing her during his “Fox & Friends” interview, Trump said, “Stephanie is terrific.”

Others believed to be under consideration, according a source, include Tony Sayegh, who left his job as Treasury Department spokesman this week, and State Department spokeswoman Morgan Ortagus, a former Fox News contributor.

Because 2020 is looming, it should be a woman.

Candace Owens needs more seasoning (but she is otherwise wonderful). Judge Jeannine can get too intense.

Heather Nauert would be perfect. She has been tested at State and was successfully punching way above the weight of her position.

Remember that Heather was offered the UN Ambassadorship but turned it down. If her declining the job at the UN didn't p!ss off the President, she would be at the top of the list for Sarah's job.

The replacement should be the “low talker” woman from the Puffy Shirt Seinfeld episode. That would force those slime ball reporters to be quite. ..lol.

“He doesn’t need a press secretary.”

I thought that, too, since press conferences are prett much over. Then I saw Ari Fleisher and Sean Spicer interviewed yesterday, and the job is huge, with non-stop behind-the-scenes work all the time. Being in front of the cameras is a very small part of the job.

“Remember that Heather was offered the UN Ambassadorship but turned it down.”

I always wondered why she backed out. Never did hear the reason.

On the surface, I can only think of two.

The UN is a meat grinder and not an automatic stepping stone to a higher "domestic" position (there are two reasons right there).

Secondly, I think she was spreading her wings at State.

She went from being spokesperson for State to being acting Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs, the fourth ranking position at State.

Also, she became part of Pompeo's inner circle.

The Presidential Press Secretary is brutal and would be an odd lateral kind of advance for Heather, but it would make her a household name.

From the Press Secretary job, she could conceivably go anywhere.

“she became part of Pompeo’s inner circle.”

If so, and if Pompeo trusts her, that’s a great thing.

She had a nanny issue, which made confirmation in the Senate a problem. PR doesn’t require confirmation.

Yep.

Under Trump, the Press Secretary position can be defined by the person in the job.

Heather could conceivable not only be Presidential mouthpiece, but also the President's "lawyer in the court of public opinion."

That's the great thing about President Trump. Because he is a "what you see is what you get" kind of person (no fakery, no put-on or pretension), he creates opportunities for those around him to "round him out."

Heather could be much more than just a spokesperson, she could effectively become an aspect of the Trump personality and thereby a real part of the Presidency itself.

The no-holds-barred Dan Bongino is my favorite commentator on all of TV news. I call him "Dan Terrific" !

Nevertheless, if he were picked as new press secretary his hard-hitting style and cutting-edge commentary would be handcuffed, stifled and curtailed.

We (and President Trump, also) can't afford to lose him to an important-but-routine Swamp job where he'd be operating in a highly-circumscribed and more confined verbal environment. He's one of our strongest commentary assets on Fox.

I go with Hogan...and I bet the Prez will also.

Let Trump be his own press secretary. Who knows his thoughts and his message better than he does?
