The government is in "pretty good shape" to cope with a no-deal Brexit, the head of civil service has said.
Speaking at an event organised by the Institute for Government, Cabinet Secretary Sir Mark Sedwill said there had been "a lot of preparation".
He said: "We have got the government in pretty good shape and public services in pretty good shape for it".
A key issue in the Tory leadership campaign has been whether a no-deal Brexit should be an option for the UK.
The top three contenders so far in the race to become the leader of the Conservative Party - and therefore prime minster - have all said they would consider leaving the EU without a deal.
Boris Johnson, the frontrunner thus far, clarified he was "not aiming for a no-deal outcome" for Brexit at the launch of his campaign for the Tory leadership.
But he stressed the threat that Britain could cuts its European ties without a deal was a "vital" negotiation tool... Some MPs were hoping to prevent this scenario from happening, but on Wednesday the Commons rejected a Labour-led effort that would have enabled opponents of a no-deal Brexit the chance to table legislation to thwart the UK leaving without any agreement on the 31 October deadline.
Mr Sedwill's comments contrast with those made by many British businesses.
Figures seen by BBC's Newsnight have suggested that many UK businesses "are not even close to being ready".

The other 27 countries don't want to be seen refusing the British plea for another extension, so they'll be more than happy when the British crash out of their own volition

I thought that basically any EU "citizen" had the right,under current regulations,to live and work in Britain.
A few years ago we went to Britain and Ireland and all we encountered in restaurants (for example) were Poles!
You’re right, they do. But that right isn’t ‘determined by foreign bureaucrats’. It was determined by the British government when it signed the Maastricht Treaty in 1992.

1. regarding the creation of EU rules - these are proposed by either one of the MEPs or one of the governments to the EU commission to investigate and prepare. The Eu parliament amends or votes on it and the rule has to be approved by the UK government leader (as well as the other 27 leaders) - and then it has to be amended/approved by the individual parliaments - they are given leeway in how they wish to implement.
To give an analogy - imagine if the US was really federal and every law passed in Congress had to be:
1. passed unanimously by every senator
2. interpreted by the state legislators and implemented as befits them
"foreign bureaucrats determining who's allowed to enter... and live in .. Britain" -- nothing of the sort - the Uk is not part of the Schengen - it opted out of that. The UK is only obliged - like every other country in the eu club - to allow free movement of EU NATIONALS - not residents, not guests. Also, EU citizens have a few weeks in which they can reside without a job and as per EU rules there are curbs on the welfare they can receive. The non-citizens cannot travel, reside or work without getting a UK tourist visa or residence permit or work permit
Yes - and Poles are EU citizens. the immigrants from Asia etc. are residents - temporary or permanent (to get a permanent residency you have to live and work for at least 5 to 10 years continuously and citizenship takes longer) - the "refugees" (really migrants) got temporary residency in Germany but cannot travel to the UK (not part of Schengen) nor reside, nor work without separately applying to the UK

The US position - and quite rightly - is "you give up the EU rules, not if you want a deal with me, you got to follow my rules"
The MSM posted fake news that there was going to be action in regards to the energy efficiency of toasters. Three days later this was clearly state as false - not even thought of, leave alone planned and shelved
