A lot of the public is really alienated from a lot of the journalism that they see - they dont find it particularly trustworthy, they dont find it particularly relevant and they dont find it leaves them in a better place.
While many news organizations add paywalls and some see increases in digital subscriptions, there has been little change in the proportion of people paying for online news, apart from the Trump bump rise in the United States in 2016/2017.

They dont find it particularly factual.
Agreed! No one — left or right — will pay for opinions or unsubstantiated rumors, which is what all these “journalist” peddle. If they want that, they can get it for free on YouTube.
Zero hits aka no paying for fake news from the fake news nets.
Zero newspapers for over a decade, zero fake news mags like Newsweak/Slime since President Reagan was elected the first time.
Zero local fake news after President Trump won the electoral election.
“Over 93% of ‘journalists’ admit voting democrat”
Perhaps a factor.
Stop being the same business model as the FBI, complete with their own counterintelligence group. That would be a start. But that also means stop hiring former government appointees to run your newsrooms. Who could have seen that train wreck coming?
The days of $30 a month subscriptions are long gone.
There are hundreds of sites you might want to see- you can’t spend $30 a month to join all of them.
Advertising works, if you’re not doing stupid ‘click bait’ stories
Example: “Some Amazing Things Just Happened! (You’ll never believe number 20)”
click -> next.
You wont believe this stuff. We have a bunch

Here’s number 1:

here’s # 2

The News Business has two main problems:
They don’t make any effort to publish actual News.
They don’t make any effort to be a sensible Business.
It’s anti-American propaganda, funded by nefarious means.
Yeah, LOL...
Just what we said while they continue to deny it.

We want/need reporters not journalists.
It's so insidious and so pervasive... I wonder how many people actually feel they're being manipulated. The whole system of sponsorship is (has been) a full court press on traditional American values for donkeys' years!
I do. I donate to Free Republic.
Sigh, gone are the days of the gonzo journalism of Hunter S Thompson, where if you had no news to report, you went out & made some (as opposed to making it up). Living in a land of make believe.
A function of the fact that unpaid bloggers often do a better job of covering the news than “professional journalists”.
We do. We pay every time an advertisement-laden page blares into our faces and half a dozen popups obscure the content we're trying to read screaming "Look at me!" Newspapers - remember them? - survived on ad revenues, not subscription fees, and that has not changed. What is happening is the exact thing that happened to cable TV - it first promised that the subscription would deliver an ad-free environment and then found out it could have it both ways and the customers couldn't do anything about it. Which we couldn't...until we found an alternative. And that is exactly what is happening now with the news.
My point: THEY"RE NOT REAL!
As Trump has pointed out over and over.. they're FAKE NEWS."
The simple reality here is that even if every news organization was engaged in top-notch, ethical, responsible journalism, the advances in telecommunications over the last 40 years have resulted in a huge disaggregation of viewers/readers among so many different media outlets. As a result, it is almost impossible for any one newspaper, TV station or website to generate enough of an audience to pay the bills and keep the doors open.
Rush just said that CNN has a smaller audience that the Home Gardening Network.
