You need to read up on the Romans. They were some of the most clean people in the WORLD - then and today. Hygiene was why they saw a limited amount of medical catastrophes - as in the Black death.
Their medical equipment is as modern as today's. They used SILVER pins/staples as stitches to close soldiers wounds - same as we have stated to use within the past 30 or so years.
The Romans used urine to wash their clothes and to whiten their teeth.
