The fun little secret there about "Reconquista"... Mexico only owned those lands for 27 years.
Mexico became a country in 1821 (Declaration in 1821, Constitution in 1824, and not fully recognized until 1836).
The Treaty of Hidalgo, ceding the SW to the US, was signed in 1848 (although a small slice was added in the Gadsden Purchase in 1854)
The REALLY fun part? The Treaty of Hidalgo specifically gave the residents of UT, ARIZ, CA, and NEV (plus a small western slice of NM and CO) three options: remain citizens of Mexico but stay in place... become citizens of the US and stay in place... or be repatriated into Mexico. NINETY THREE percent of the residents voluntarily chose to become American citizens. Four percent chose to stay but as Mexican citizens. Three percent went to Mexico.
Nobody has yet to explain why 27 years of Mexican rule overrules the Treaty of Hidalgo, overrules the voluntary choice of the peoples living there at the time, the most recent 171 years of American rule, or the previous thousands of years of ownership by the Apache, Navajo, Ute, Hopi, Zuni, Pomo, Paiute, Mojave, Yuma and other Native tribes. Only those magical 27 years matter, and nothing else. ROFLMBO.
