This is unmitigated bullsh!t.

It’s US law that prevents the deportation of “asylum seekers”.

Mexico just needs to stop them from coming north, not LIMIT them.

I think Mexico gave a copy of their counter offer to the WP so then can try to soften up Trump’s demands. I doubt this is an acceptable deal as is. Lot’s of sausage grinding left to do.

The US has an agreement with Canada (safe third country) whereby asylum seekers must seek asylum in the first country they land in.

The goal, I believe, is to have such an agreement with Mexico. Thus, asylum seekers would have to apply for asylum in Mexico. They would be deported from the US.

Would it survive a court challenge? I don’t know. But the agreement with Canada hasn’t been struck down.
