It's not about them voting, it's about Congressional apportionment. There are over 20 seats in Congress that are apportioned for illegal immigrants, most in deep blue states. California alone gains an extra five seats.

Alabama is suing the Dept of Commerce to exclude illegals from the counts used for apportionment. To do this, they need the Citizenship question on the Census. If the question is not included, the courts will say there is nothing they can do, and they will throw the case out.
