Secretary of Defense Spokesperson LTC Dave Eastburn provided the following readout:

Acting Secretary of Defense Patrick Shanahan met today with Vietnam Minister of National Defense Ngo Xuan Lich on the margins of the annual Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore.

The two leaders reaffirmed the comprehensive partnership between the United States and Vietnam and highlighted historic progress in the bilateral defense relationship. They agreed to continue building practical defense cooperation, particularly in the area of maritime security, and underscored the importance of close cooperation on addressing legacy of war issues and accounting for U.S. personnel missing from the Vietnam War.

Acting Secretary Shanahan underscored the U.S. commitment to promote a free and open Indo-Pacific region based on a stable, rules-based order, and welcomed Vietnam’s chairmanship of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in 2020. Both leaders agreed that a strong and comprehensive partnership based on mutual respect and shared principles promotes regional peace and stability.

Try to imagine if Woodrow Wilson had not contracted the influenza at the Paris Peace conference in 1919, had met with Ho Che Minth, who wanted the French to end their colonial rule in Vietnam, and if Wilson had the strength to confront the British and French as he had intended on the issue of European colonialism and the need for a fair peace treaty. Perhaps there would have been no WW II or a Vietnam War.

Not really, the Vietnamese went to war against China 1979–1991 . The Vietnamese are not clients of Red China, they are independent and an ally of the United States.

No, now they (and most other Asian countries) fear Red China. I still don’t believe we should have relations with these POSes; let Red China have them.

“Just another puppet of the commies of Red China....”

You obviously don’t know that China has repeatedly invaded Vietnam for the past many centuries. Vietnam has always kicked Chinese butt. The last major invasion by China was 1978. China sent 200,000 troops and 550 tanks across the border. Vietnam stopped them 20-30 miles in. China only stayed a month and lost 62,000 troops with 420 tanks destroyed and the rest captured.
The Vietnamese have beaten China every time they invade.

Not an ally, rather a partner.

What about the mid 1980s skirmishes/phony war? Seems like Vietnam may have got the somewhat worse in that.

The “skirmishes” in the 80s left about equal casualties between VN and CN. But China did get kicked out.

Viets intensely dislike China. The Annamites who live next door and run the government even more so. The Viets may have a government arrangement similar to China but they are ferociously nationalistic. Curiously they have a good bit of respect for the US and even really like us compared to the other Tay barbarians. Viet-Nam would be an excellent ally to contain China.Forbes rates the SRV as the ‘most pro-business ‘ country in the world.

Just another puppet of the commies of Red China.

The Vietnamese have had a lot more success warring with the ChiComs than we have.

The ChiComs ended up retreating back to their own territory, and the attempts to discourage Vietnamese involvement in Cambodia were a complete failure.

Results

Tactical - stalemate.
Strategic - Vietnamese victory.

Thanks.

Interesting thread, but I try to stay a mile away from anything resembling local politics, here.

100 miles even.

But I will note that fully TWICE in the last three months or so, I have seen coffee shops which were opened with Chinese characters on the sign, near where I live, close down.

On very busy streets.

Just saying.

Was that the 80s skirmishes, or the original 79 invasion?

Then again, I doubt China wanted to occupy Vietnamese territory for long. Rather, I suspect they wanted to do damage and leave.
