The UK is pretty much mid-sized. Even were they to lose Scotland and NI, they’re still decently sized in terms of population and area.

Tiny is San Marino :)

Estonia, Slovenia etc. are small but England-Wales is not small.

Once Scotland and NI leave, rUK will be a smaller state - it would be out of the top 10 by 2025 (due to slowing of the economy while others race ahead). THAT is the killer - the leave voters before the referendum were led to believe that they’d return to Empire. That’s not going to happen, but they still want to leave, so let the 48% to 52% take E-W out of the EU. No deal, no one else to blame.

The UK needs to understand that it has failed since the 1950s continuously and it is not the US or anyone else’s fault. By passing things down the road, being complacent, they have let the rest of the world race past them.

They are following the same route the Qing Empire did - “we have centuries of history behind us, you have nothing” and to an ex-Anglophile like me it is a tragedy watching the shell of a nation. It needs shock therapy to toss out the imperial past and learn that it needs to reinvent itself.

The problem is that the reinvention may result in complete disintegration, which I fear may be the net result.

Western Europe needs to put Christianity at the center of their nationalism, otherwise it is shallow nationalism. Most Polish nationalists are religious, but a large minority (ONR) are non-religious and some can be anti-religious. I point out that it makes no sense to say “I am proud to be Polish but Christianity is false” because every single nation is a social construct, and a recent one (the Poles until the 1000s were other nations, the English etc. ) - but Christ is permanent.

I doubt The UK will allow Scotland another referendum. What I really cannot see is northern Ireland wanting out of the UK. If anybody fiercely wants to remain part of the UK its them.
