It should also be pointed out that in some categories/fields, the Russian stuff is just plain better. Their helicopters are better than the Western counterparts in so many ways it’s not even funny; prior to the USSR’s collapse they were ahead of us in laser technology - both laser ranging and laser weapons development. One a more granular level, many (even in our own military) rate their general purpose machine gun (PK/PKM/PKP) as better than what we currently have for that role.

For a power that’s not tightly allied to us or perhaps even one that is but that goes for the best in a category, sometimes it makes absolute sense to get Russian (or Russian-derived like a lot of stuff from Central/Eastern Europe) gear. It can make sense at the individual level, too; my go to defense weapons do not include an AR-15, for example.
