And for how much longer do you believe “911” will be of any utility?

As these young adults are caught; they should have a big “L” tatooed on their foreheads that stands for “Loser”. Add “L’s” as needed when busted for their next heinous crime when they get out of prison in 2039. At least that’s when they should get out.

A mob of Amish Yutes, why didn't he just use his gun?

The sad fact is these young adults, I refuse to call them teens, were likely packing heat too and there were a lot of them. Of course I do like the idea of saving the taxpayers money by donating a bullet to each brain pan. Time and money saver.

As you implied, 911 is of limited use. But if you’re going to confront a mob, best to call 911 first. It only takes a moment. And while it might not help, it can’t hurt.

as such stories often attract all sorts of "Amish" comments (which I'm no fan of, but to each his own).

Like you, I try hard to always see the best in people. But I've also learned to view the world in statistical distributions. In all social phenomena, the vast majority of people fall into the normal middle. But its the extremes, or "tails" of the distributions which always are the most skewed, and also the most obvious.

The man reportedly tried to intervene

Did you ever notice this in news stories? What's with "tried"? He "tried" to intervene--literally to "go between" two parties? He in fact did. That's why the future inmate punched him. (Or perhaps "tried" to punch him?)

The newsette was "trying" to explain that the fireman was "trying" to stop the felons from harassing the couple. Except, it sounds as if he succeeded in doing so. I mean, they had to turn their attention to him, right? And did the police report say the future college valedictorians stuck around and harassed the couple some more? I don't know, but I'd guess they didn't, and cut and run instead, to avoid arrest--wouldn't you? That's what valedictorians do.

So, at the cost of his safety and some injuries, it sounds as if this heroic fireman succeeded in stopping a crime. Right?

I know why Leftist thought organs (which often includes Fox) always say "tried"--because they have no concept of personal sacrifice that achieves a goal. To them, it only succeeded if the dude swooped in like Superman and everything the bad guys tried bounced off him. Never mind that he saved the people from harm.

And a fireman who dies in the line of duty who stops a fire in a burning building, saving 80 lives or so? I guess the J-school zombies would say he "tried." Because . . . they hate real-world heroes, who make them feel irrelevant.

The corporal punishments of past times did have some merit. They involved pain which most people, even criminals prefer to avoid. The pain, although quite intense, was over in a matter of days or weeks—as opposed to months or years of incarceration. The culprit could get along with his life pretty soon. It was cost-effective, again as opposed to feeding and housing an inmate. And branding was a way of letting everyone know what kind of person one was dealing with. A ‘T’ on the forehead let you know you were dealing with a thief.

The fireman may have well considered he was going to get his ass beat before he intervened but did so anyway to protect the elderly couple.

"...the first step in confronting a mob is dialing 911..."

Nope. My first step is 1911.

E. 86th Street is generally an upscale, very safe, low crime area. Mostly shoplifting and minor stuff.

I hear ya. But remember that someone in the mob might also be a fan of Mr. Browning’s work. So I still say a quick call to the cavalry is in order.

Now, whether or not the cavalry will show up, that’s another story.

No amount of civilization has an impact on street thugs intent on maiming and killing.
