If you've been paying any attention at all to journalism in recent years — maybe not a good idea, but if you have — you surely have noticed those stories predicting, often with a certain relish, that the United States is about to become a majority-minority country.
Such predictions, as the Obama administration Census Bureau director noted in 2014, "made demographic change look like a zero-sum game that white Americans were losing." Such fears contributed to Donald Trump's election in 2016. No one wants to vote for the side that seems to be saying, "Hurry up and die."
But are those trends so inevitable? Not necessarily, writes political scientist Eric Kaufmann, a Canadian who teaches in Britain and is of Jewish, Chinese and Latino ancestry. His most recent book is called "Whiteshift," which he defines as "the mixture of many non-whites into the white group through voluntary assimilation."
As he points out, something like this has happened before. A hundred years ago, Catholic, Orthodox and Jewish immigrants pouring into Ellis Island were considered to be of different "races" by white Anglo-Saxon Protestant elites.
Half a century ago, their descendants were regarded as still culturally and politically distinctive in Nathan Glazer and Daniel Patrick Moynihan's description of New York ethnic groups in "Beyond the Melting Pot." A "balanced" ticket in those days had to include Irish, Italian and Jewish candidates.
Today, all these groups are lumped together as "whites," even though there are still perceptible, though muted, differences in political attitudes and perspectives between those with different ancestries.

This is true. I’m seeing it with my Latino students. They like white culture, they speak English, avoid Spanish, and quite a few of them are conservative. They’re pro-military, anti-abortion, and firmly believe in 2 genders. They tolerate Shakespeare and opera and country music pretty well. And they LOVE Jordan Peterson and Ben Shapiro.
First it was national origin, then race, now sex; if you permit to be subjected you will be.
Yes, my experience agrees with yours. Hispanics actually want to be...hold for it...Americans, that is, participate in the shared European-based history of our country. People of Spanish descent are, of course, Europeans and had a considerable impact on what is now the US, but Hispanics are Latin American speakers of Spanish (or, loosely, Portuguese) and are often mixed Indian or African or even Asian blood. However, just like the Eastern European Jews and other groups, they came here because they wanted to be part of the project, not because they wanted to be shunted off into the special (Democrat controlled) “Hispanics only” zone.
The same is true of blacks, I think, many of whom in my town (Jacksonville) are solidly middle class, many from Navy families, and despite some horrible incidents in Jacksonville’s history (look up ax-handles) just want to be part of the larger society and not shuttled into the (Democrat controlled) “black only” zone.
I think Trump’s outspokenness and pride in the US has had a lot to do with this.

No, they were not considered different races. There have been people from all three of these groups in America since at least the Revolution. This is a variant of the “Irish weren’t considered white” lie. It is part of an effort to deconstruct the idea of white people in order to erase them from the face of the Earth. The earliest immigration law in the United States opened it to free white persons of good character. That’s the Naturalization Act of 1790.
And then there are the white kids who want to be gangstas.
The terminology wasn’t exact, but in the 19th and early 20th century, they did use the word “race” in referring to the “inferior species,” such as the Irish, Jews, blacks, Italians and Southern Europeans in general.
Margaret Sanger considered anybody who wasn’t a WASP like her to be a member of an inferior race, and these people had to be stamped out and prevented from “breeding.” And she was fully racist in her speech. Yes, that Margaret Sanger, the big feminist hero.

Don’t laugh but as a guy who never watches 99.95 of TV (Highway Through Hell,Heavy Rescue & Ancient Aliens) I only watch old dvd series. Peter Gunn,Dragnet,Adam 12,M Squad (my screen name) and now ChiPs.
Halfway through the episodes the Latino officer Ponch (Erik Estrada) seems to be like the students you described. Keeping Latino pride but resenting guys who try to get out of something with “but you’re one of us”. “No, I work for everybody, no favors.”
Even had a country music dance episode in Season Two. He participated to meet women. TV fantasy but a pathway to harmony to replace vicious hatred the Dems promote.

You see this in NYC a lot if you look past superficialities...which liberals never do.
In my hometown (a midsize industrial city in the Great Lakes region) in my parents' lifetime, a Polish/German couple was considered a "mixed marriage."
Ad when the Puerto Ricans came in in the 60's: White? No way! (People said then.) And it had little or nothing to do with color.
I have seen passenger manifests where immigrants were categorized by race but used as we would say ethnic group or nationality today rather than race.
Except for the hair and the attitude.

The recent immigrants here to North Carolina seem almost entirely Indio, smaller stature, browner, almost asian features. I suspect they’re not legal immigrants. But, they relate more to the traditional country culture than anything, prefer to live out in the exurbs or beyond. Cowboy hats and boots, the women prefer dresses if special occasion. Kids well mannered. If they go out dancing, it’s often country line dancing. Their traditional music has always sounded rather like a polka with Spanish lyrics to me, so I suppose the more traditional forms of country and bluegrass are more relatable. I don’t believe for a second that they’re going to vote Republican, too many Democrat handouts at stake, but culturally they’re more like us than them. Maybe a breakthrough is possible at some point, probably once they’ve got something to lose to other Democrat matters that don’t giveth, but taketh away.

Ponch was apparently the only CHP officer who had a partner in the show.
I imagine the stats will get a little weird, as many ambitious light skinned Hispanics and Asians are now marking themselves down as white. And there is zero resentment from whites to their doing this, as those that do tend to be hard working, educated and respectable.
