Until 9/11, Iran held the Muslim record for killing the most Americans in a single sitting - the Marine barracks bombing, where 200 Marines died as a result of a Hezbollah attack conducted at Iranian government behest. Whereas the 9/11 attacks were essentially a coup attempt against the Saudi royal family - the hope being that the US would invade Saudi Arabia and topple the al-Saud family, thereby uniting the Muslim world behind al Qaeda’s plan to make bin Laden the first Caliph since the Ottomans were removed from power by Kemal Ataturk.
