One of the first steps in this direction was the creation of the "Hate Crime".

Now we see how leftists have expanded the concept to basically categorize anything they disagree with as a Hate Crime.

In the USA today that can get you disbarred from Social Media and get your kids ridiculed and berated in school or sent home in disgrace.
