Australia’s national broadcaster has projected a stunning victory for the conservative coalition government.
Scott Morrison, Australia’s conservative prime minister, won his first full term in office on Saturday, according to projections from Australia’s national broadcaster.
If the results hold, they would confound expectations that the country’s voters were ready for a change in course after six years of tumultuous leadership under his party. The polls had pointed to a loss for Mr. Morrison’s right-leaning coalition for months.
With a handful of seats still looking too close to call, it remained possible that Mr. Morrison would have to lead a minority government, rather than retaining outright control.
But whatever the eventual margin of victory, his coalition’s performance amounted to another swell in the wave of populist fervor that swept President Trump into office and set Britain on a path out of the European Union.

The page-topper at the NY Times says “Morrison victory stuns Australia” or something like that. The Australians VOTED for him! I’m sure they are not quite “stunned.”
The purpose of headlines and writing like this is to keep people always on edge and fearful of “conservative right-wingers” and to doubt the election processes. Everything is Orwellian nowadays.

Well, in this case they pretty much all did. Australia is one of the few countries to have compulsory voting. This tends to get voting in the high 90’s percent for each election.
Unique among major First World countries, Australia has compulsory voting.

It might not be a bad idea to have a basic civics exam as a requirement for voting. Government of, by and for the stupid will not long endure. In the age of CNN and Facebook and mal-education, that is the default voter. For those who fail the civics exam, there can be voters ed classes, just like there is driver’s ed for motorists who run stop signs or pass school buses unloading students.
