There IS an appropriate punishment for a failed coup: EXILE.

Every coup plotter loses his/her US citizenship, forfeits assets, and is flown to any country that will have them.

If they ever set foot in the US or any American territory, they do life at Gitmo with no change of parole.

It's simple, it's elegant, it's non-violent, and it would be a real solution to The Swamp.
