First reaction is he’s in terrible trouble needing to use a public defender. But some of the federal defenders are quite good.
Still, he’s in such a mess that he can’t even reveal his finances to justify getting a public defender.

I’d say the judge can probably answer that question with specificity. Avenatti probably walked into court with enough pawnable jewelry to pay a lawyer with.
