Attorney General William P. Barr has assigned the top federal prosecutor in Connecticut to examine the origins of the Russia investigation, according to two people familiar with the matter, a move that President Trump has long called for but that could anger law enforcement officials who insist that scrutiny of the Trump campaign was lawful.
John H. Durham, the United States attorney in Connecticut, has a history of serving as a special prosecutor investigating potential wrongdoing among national security officials, including the F.B.I.s ties to a crime boss in Boston and accusations of C.I.A. abuses of detainees.
His inquiry is the third known investigation focused on the opening of an F.B.I. counterintelligence investigation during the 2016 presidential campaign into possible ties between Russias election interference and Trump associates.
The departments inspector general, Michael E. Horowitz, is separately examining investigators use of wiretap applications and informants and whether any political bias against Mr. Trump influenced investigative decisions. And John W. Huber, the United States attorney in Utah, has been reviewing aspects of the Russia investigation. His findings have not been announced.
Additionally on Capitol Hill, Senator Lindsey Graham, Republican of South Carolina and chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, has said he, too, intends to review aspects of law enforcements work in the coming months. And Republicans conducted their own inquiries when they controlled the House, including publicizing details of the F.B.I.s wiretap use.

Is he authorized to use the powers of a grand jury or is he not?
Great point. Are we getting another administrative investigation or are Obama admin actions now a criminal “matter.”
this guy looks bit like Don Cherry. I wonder if he has glitzy suits?
True, but does he now how to eat?
Just saw Trey Gowdy on Hannity. From documents he saw as a gang of eight member told investigators, to look at emails between Comey and Brennan from 12/16. This, I hadnt heard spoken of before.
He is one of many. This one is a public face.
“a move that President Trump has long called for but that could anger law enforcement officials who insist that scrutiny of the Trump campaign was lawful.”
Another, less biased way to say this, could be:
In a move sure to rattle lawmakers who may have been involved in illegal activities, President Trump called for a probe into the origins of the Russia probe.
In December 2000, Durham revealed secret FBI documents that convinced a judge to vacate the 1968 murder convictions of Enrico Tameleo, Joseph Salvati, Peter J. Limone and Louis Greco because they had been framed by the agency. In 2007, the documents helped Salvati, Limone, and the families of the two other men who had died in prison win a US$101.7 million civil judgment against the government.
In 2002, Durham helped secure the conviction of retired FBI agent John J. Connolly Jr., who was sentenced to 10 years in prison on federal racketeering charges for protecting Bulger and Flemmi from prosecution and warning Bulger to flee just before the gangster’s 1995 indictment.
Durham’s task force also gathered evidence against retired FBI agent H. Paul Rico who was indicted in Oklahoma on state charges that he helped Bulger and Flemmi kill a Tulsa businessman in 1981. Rico died in 2004 before the case went to trial.
Durham also led a series of high-profile prosecutions in Connecticut against the New England Mafia and corrupt politicians, including former governor John G. Rowland.
In 2008, John Durham was appointed by then-Attorney General Michael Mukasey to investigate the destruction of CIA videotapes of detainee interrogations. On November 8, 2010, Durham closed the investigation without recommending any criminal charges be filed. Durham’s final report remains secret but was the subject of an unsuccessful lawsuit under the Freedom of Information Act filed by The New York Times reporter Charlie Savage.
In 2009, Attorney General Eric Holder appointed Durham to lead the Justice Department’s investigation of the legality of CIA’s use of so-called “enhanced interrogation techniques”.
Does this mean that Barr is passing the buck to cover up, or that he’s serious about indicting all the wrongdoing we’ve known about for over two years?
Thanks. I’ll try to do better...
I think it was Dan Bongino who ripped into comey and said it was not court ordered surveillance but court approved surveillance based on (false) info the fbi gave the judge
Perhaps, but now that Barr has serious people investigating as well as the entire Justice dept involved, Huber will look like a dishonest hack and total fool if he doesn’t come up with anything and everyone else DOES!
Huber’s hand is now forced as he will have to conduct a serious bonafide and legitimate investigation and not provide cover for this crap or HE will be implicated.
Many are doing the same work quietly and behind the scenes?
Im as skeptical as anyone concerning the Clintons or DS actors getting justice. But this Durham looks like the real deal plus he can put all of these snakes (currently in government or gone) under oath in front of a grand jury. With so many bad actors, with their asses on the line, some will break. Once one does there will be a cascade of rats fleeing the sinking ship. Too many easy targets who have committed too many, too obvious felonies for this to just go away.
I agree. And we must remember there is no honor among thieves. They’ll be preoccupied with saving their own butts.
Yep there are 2 other IGs besides Horowitz a well known fact inside the Beltway.

I’ll take “passing the buck for $1000, Alex”.
“what happened to that Huber guy whom Sessions appointed out in Utah to look into certain aspects of this?”
I’ve heard a few references on Hannity, that Huber has been focused on leaks to the media, including classified information. It sounded like something would be coming, but they did not sound very excited about it.
He’s the guy who put John Connolly away. Connolly was Whitey Bulger’s FBI handler and let Whitey skate for years. He knows FBI corruption. That’s a solid pick by the AG.
Well first, what is Huber looking into? He is tasked to investigate Clinton, the Uranium One sale, and the Federal Bureau of Investigations handling of the inquiry into Clintons use of a private email server.
Nothing more, nothing less. Several things will happen before Huber makes his move. Every step is necessary.
Patience. It’s happening according to a well thought out plan. Trust it.
