Of course, since the electric car user has been getting away with zero gas tax in the past, you could consider the 1K price today to be catch-up for the taxes these people should have paid in the past.
Of you could also call it "Reparations." That term would make it popular with the influenced voters in Illinois who have turned the state blue.

This shouldn't bother them. The "benefit" to the planet should be worth the extra $1000, not to mention the satisfaction of showing the world that they care. They have chosen a vehicle that only exists as a hybrid, and is distinctive (ugly) enough that anyone who sees them will have no doubt that this is truly a "good person" who deserves admiration.
