“Lived” is accurate. What we have now is more of a nation-state where central government can regulate, per Justice Thomas, “everything down to church suppers.”

When the Authoritarians want something done, they merely punt over to some agency or other that will jump up to write regulations, as the Founders would say "to harass our people, and eat out their substance". The role of Congress at this point appears to be that of a body of consultants who refer matters over to the bureaucracies to handle.
