Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp signs controversial 'heartbeat' bill into law

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp signed the "heartbeat" bill into law Tuesday morning.

Kemp kept his campaign promise in signing the bill, HB 481, technically called the "Living Infants Fairness and Equality (LIFE) Act," that will prohibit abortions in the state after a heartbeat is detected, as early as six weeks into a pregnancy. The law allows exceptions in the case of rape, incest, or if the life of the mother is in danger.

Before the signing of the bill, State Rep. Ed Setzler, pointed to science, law, and the simple fact that common sense says a beating heart is a sign of life and those children should receive the full protection of the law. State Sen. Renee Unterman, who ushered the bill through the state Senate, said she has waited her entire time as a legislator for this moment, calling it the "culmination of my political career."

Who gets to be the arbiter of what is “controversial” and what isn’t?

This will be subject to a lawsuit, I’m sure. Liberals are just itching to see an injunction, and eventually seeing this law overturned.

Stay tuned. This case could be the next big legal case in abortion court cases. I think some other states are considering heartbeat bills as well.

Will Stacy Abrams waddle out there, and proclaim this is an illegal bill, because Kemp didn’t really actually win the election, so he’s not really supposed to sign legislation in the first place????

I think we win if this goes to SCOTUS.

It's controversial when the left doesn't like it.

As opposed to Obamacare, which wasn't.

They are already boycotting GA from making movies in GA. At this point, GA might as well go for broke. What has GA got to lose?

no kidding! When stating aborting a being with a heartbeat (murder) is somehow a controversial thing, then we know the culture is lost.

And Left knows now all they have to do to get their way is declare something as “controversial”, the majority may not care, but they also know that Companies don’t like things that are “controversial” and would just rather not deal with it.

Stopping the murder of innocent babies is controversial, but killing babies up to and after birth is not. Same thing with saying Christians can live and engage in homosexual acts....don’t work - steal the wages From hard working people...

See my tagline

Thanks for asking that question, FRiend.

I was a newspaperman for 25 years. I don’t recall ever using “controversial” in a story — or even in casual conversation. My take — present the facts and let the reader decide whether there’s any controversy.

“Controversial” is a particularly bad example of lazy journalese. It’s right down there with “experts say,” “iconic,” and “according to science.”

And they are as greedy as they come. That greed will far, far outweigh their phony stances on abortion. I’ll be glad to see them go from Georgia. I’ve long grown tired of liberal, hipster, wannabe movies types moving in and ruining the place.

As someone that lives there and is proud that the Governor signed the bill, finally, I can tell you what Georgia has to lose. Liberal dipshits coming into the state and ruining it. Hopefully, this bill will also keep out all the Liberals that are moving down from the Northeast and other states that they’ve ruined.

Georgia’s first life long Republican governor. Protecting life is just another reason we voted for Brian and will again.
