WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump said on Friday he focused on humanitarian aid for Venezuelans during a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin, backing away from his administration's recent harsh rhetoric about Russian involvement in the crisis.

In a rare call, Trump and Putin spoke for more than an hour, their first known conversation since December and since tensions flared in Venezuela, where Washington backs opposition leader Juan Guaido and Moscow supports President Nicolas Maduro.

I say no, no, no to aid! We have many in our own country that requires aid. How about these other nations pony up? How about Canada, Australia, UK, South Africa, The Netherlands, Norway, Denmark? I’m sick of being the worlds whopping post. In years past yes we led the way but now it is time to take US tax dollars and place it squarely back into US citizen’s hands. How about instead of a 34% tax rate we stop sending our damned money over seas and reduce the tax burden to say 15%? I wouldn’t send a dime of aid to that country until the people within their own country overthrow their current repressive regime.
