The boy likely died of encephalitis. The condition is most often due to a virus, such as a herpes simplex virus, the varicella zoster virus (which causes chickenpox and shingles), and measles, mumps, and rubella viruses. Encephalitis frequently has fatal consequences and may manifest only after an apparent recovery from the primary symptoms of the viral infection.
