Cyclone Fani: 100 Million People In Path Of India's Worst Storm In 20 Years

What is expected to be India's strongest tropical cyclone to make landfall in 20 years is barreling toward 100 million people on the country's east coast, prompting officials to begin emergency evacuations.

On Thursday, Tropical Cyclone Fani had strengthened significantly in the Bay of Bengal, with maximum sustained winds of 250 kilometers per hour (155 mph) and gusts of up to 305 kilometers per hour (190 mph), according to the Joint Typhoon Warning Center.

Fani, which is about 60 kilometers (38 miles) off the coast of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha states, is equivalent in intensity to a Category 4 hurricane in the Atlantic, or a supertyphoon in the Pacific. (It's 2 mph away from a Category 5 hurricane, the highest on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale.)

It is not expected to make landfall until Friday morning in Odisha, near the city of Puri, but tropical cyclone-force winds are already coming ashore in portions of Andhra Pradesh and along the Odisha coast as well.

Tragically, this is Nature’s way of controlling the world’s population.

You won’t see leftists here heading to India, Bangladesh, Pakistan etc. to help them (only a few honest relief agencies will; Millenials won’t - there are no Lotte’s there or toilets).

When I visited the Indian Sub-Continent, I had a Cyclone Fani, but that was just the Amoebic Dysentery talking.

Where do you evacuate 100 MILLION people to?
And has Houston declared itself a Cyclone Fani sanctuary city yet? All disasters seem to blow straight into this city. Not joking yuk

That’s what I was thinking - Bangladesh always gets the short end of the stick. In more ways than one. I recall years ago hearing about some of their great floods.

Track prediction from the Pacific Joint Typhoon Warning Center, run by the US/Japanese militaries’ weather groups.

From this map, it looks like Bangladesh will get washed out to sea.

Tragically, this is Nature’s way of controlling the world’s population.

I prefer capitalism's way of controlling the world's population - provide better economic opportunities and watch the standard of living go up while birth rates go down. All a natural disaster is going to do is kill a few hundred people and cause misery for thousands.

"That’s what I was thinking - Bangladesh always gets the short end of the stick. In more ways than one. I recall years ago hearing about some of their great floods."

It is normal each year for 60% of the country to go underwater during the monsoon.
