Combat Vet Who Stopped The Synagogue Shooter: ‘I Scared The Hell Out Of Him’

The man who fired a semi-automatic weapon inside the Chabad of Poway synagogue in San Diego on Saturday froze, dropped his gun and sprinted to his car when he saw Oscar Stewart come barreling toward him, yelling so loud the priest at a neighboring church could hear.

Stewart, 51, told The Daily Caller on Sunday he doesn’t remember any conscious thought from the moment he heard the gun shots until it was all over — he just acted on instinct to stop the shooter and prevent him from leaving so he couldn’t hurt more people somewhere else. The Iraq combat veteran said his military training kicked in.

“I knew I had to be within five feet of this guy so his rifle couldn’t get to me,” Stewart said. “So I ran immediately toward him, and I yelled as loud as I could. And he was scared. I scared the hell out of him.”

Stewart served in the Navy in explosive ordnance disposal from 1990 to 1994, then enlisted in the Army in 2001 because of the Sept. 11 terror attacks.

Thus low coverage by the 'lsm'. Combat vet NOT suffering from PTSD put his skills to use to stop further damage. Not what they want out there. Thank you sir for your service and quick thinking.

Same as always.
Cowards always run.
I was threatened in Portland by three blacks all in their 30’s, over 6’.
I stood my ground and suggested they find another place to threaten people.

All three turned tail.
I’m pretty sure they were convinced I was packing.

I had left Ms Kimber home that day.

Let’s be clear, it’s low coverage by Comcast, Disney, and the new boss of CNN, ATT

I’ve been saying for a while that in a mass shooting incident your best bet is to rush the shooter. He may get a few but not nearly as many as if people try to run or do nothing

“Semi-automatic weapons do not jam.”

In all due respect to the hero, my AR has jammed before.

You take a big risk doing that. You take an even bigger risk by cowering and trying to talk them out of it.

A friend of mine had a confrontation with three hoodlums as you described trying to bum rush his car. He had a plumbing pipe which he stuck out the window and ordered them off. Fortunately, it was dark enough that they couldn't see the other end.

Amen! I think back on the Virginia Tech shooting and wonder how many of those innocent young souls would still be alive today if only someone...ANYONE...would have either been carrying, or would've rushed that shooter when he was in the process of reloading. Any type of distraction may have saved so many lives. To know that they merely huddled behind desks waiting to be next in line to die is heartbreaking.

"I think back on the Virginia Tech shooting"

Virginia Tech would have been the best place to use this tactic. He was going from classroom to classroom shooting people. Someone in the class could have positioned themselves right against the wall next to the door and jumped the guy as he entered the room. Then the rest of those in the room could have piled on top.

Apparently the “Adam Henry” survived. He should be hated and scorned and his name become like Mudd.

Above is a gunman going into a building at Seattle Pacific University. Just prior to this he had killed a boy outside.
He shoots a girl from about 10 feet with the shotgun - thankfully it was birdshot and she was able to walk away from a direct hit and get help.

The student hall monitor had pepper spray (illegal to have on campus, but nobody ever brought that up!) and tackles the shooter. The hero is an Asian kid. On his facebook page at the time he had lots of martial arts stuff, gun stuff, and.....

My Little Pony stuff!!??

That’s when a Border Patrol agent who attends the synagogue came running out to the parking lot, yelling for Stewart to get down because he had a gun.

Stewart says this man may have saved his life and pointed to his use of a civilian’s gun as evidence that gun control isn’t the answer to these kinds of tragedies.

Stewart was off-duty and was apparently handed the weapon by someone else on the scene.

Huh? Who had a gun, Stewart or the BP agent?

Agreed. Bad feeds from a magazine can pile up unfired cartridges between bolt and chamber preventing the bolt from closing or a round from chambering. A failure to extract can leave brass in the chamber with the next round jammed between the bolt face and the case head of the brass still in the chamber. Whatever the cause, it presents an opening where the malfunction leaves the shooter temporarily disarmed.

The Rabbi kept a loaded firearm in the building and made sure off-duty law enforcement members of the congregation were aware of the location. An off duty Border Patrol officer fetched it and gave chase to the shooter.
