Giants sixth-round draft pick Corey Ballentine was injured in an early Sunday morning shooting in Topeka, Kansas, that saw his Washburn college teammate Dwane Simmons tragically killed. Ballentine, 23, is expected to make a full recovery, per Washburn University. The Giants said theyve spoken to their sixth-round pick (180th overall) as he recovers in the hospital.
We are aware of the tragic situation and continue to gather information, the Giants said in a statement. We have spoken to Corey, and he is recovering in the hospital. Our thoughts are with Dwane Simmons family, friends and teammates and the rest of the Washburn community.
Investigators told 13 NEWS in Topeka, Kansas, that officers responded around 12:45 a.m. to the 1400 block of 13th Street on reports of gunfire. An officer on the scene told 13 NEWS that Simmons died in the street from a gunshot wound and later confirmed Ballentine had been injured, as well. The investigation into the shooting remains open.
Any time we lose a student it is a sad occasion, but it is particularly poignant to lose a student through such a senseless act, the University said in a statement. Both Dwane and Corey have been great examples and representatives of the football team and of Washburn University in general. This was a terrible way to end a day which should have been a day of celebration

Just getting that NFL street cred.
Reminds me of Len Bias from 1986.
“Nothing good happens after midnight...”
He did cocaine.
1400 block of 13th Street in Topeka. Would any sane person go there at 1 AM?
Indeed he did.
I think you answered your own question...
After midnight, Im smug in my bed counting sheep..nothing good happens after 11PM here in SoCal
“12:45AM.Out trying to score some drugs and/or pootie.”
I’m guessing drugs.
I prefer sex myself.
Is he a Kneeler??
Well, that is the second time this draft has involved a shooting for the Giants. The first being when the Giants shot themselves in the foot and shot the hopes of their fans by picking Daniel Jones with the sixth pick.
Why?!? Why replace an aging Eli Manning with a guy who has the upside to one day be as good as an aging Eli Manning?!?!
Hey,he was NFL rich!
He’ll recover from his wounds, get another wingman and be right back out there.
Tried to stiff the drug dealer?
For their sake, I hope they've spoken to him to wish him well and tell him he's not going to be playing for the Giants.
Who dat be ? Ballentine or Simmons ?
