Last week, a restaurant in the Canadian city of Winnipeg was allegedly defaced by racist graffiti and swastikas. News outlets described it as one of the "most brazen" attacks on the Jewish community in recent memory. A prayer vigil was planned for today.
That event has been canceled amidst revelations that the Winnipeg police now believe the hate crime was a hoax staged by the Jewish owners of the BerMax Caffe. All three were arrested and charged with "public mischief," which is the Canadian equivalent of misleading police investigators.

Not impossible. But unlikely, since attacks on Jewish business and interests are regularly made by today’s Muslims and liberals.
That is, the left does not need attacks on Jews for its propaganda. Rather, it does need fake attacks, does it not?
Then, real attacks can be ignored easier by others.
Sad to say but I consider it more likely that the authorities WANT to say this rather than that it is true.
This brings to mind the attacks on a synagogue in Miami some years ago. All of its windows were smashed. Big “hate-crime” headlines, followed by the usual handwringing and denunciations of “Nazis”. All the windows were replaced, only to be smashed out again. Another session of handwringing and talk of “Nazis” again. After the 3rd time, the windows were smashed it was found out that the Jewish guy who owned the window business that was hired to replace the windows was the one who was smashing them.
Of course, there was no apology for whipping up anger and fear, both by the window smasher or the media that so quickly jumped on the story and gave it so much play.
Oh, for god’s sake. Now it’s the Jews too?
That was my first thought.
The only thing that will save us is TRUTH--TRUTH FOR ITS OWN SAKE--and TRUTH is held in contempt by those dedicated to the groupthink delusion.
Years ago when I first read 1984, I couldn't imagine how enough people would support such a nightmarish scenario to keep it functioning.
I had the examples of Nazi Germany, Stalinist Russia, and Mao's China to reflect upon, but I could not imagine how anything like that could happen in America.
I now understand.
Western Civilization is in an advanced state of decadence. The evil most fundamental to the decadence is mendacity, i.e. contempt for TRUTH.
TRUTH could save us, but millions prefer the groupthink delusion.
The news media, whose responsibility it is to hold the LIGHT OF TRUTH, is a propaganda machine for the groupthink delusion and those who benefit from it.
The education system, from grammar schools through universities, scorn TRUTH and indoctrinate its students with the groupthink delusion.
Worst of all, millions of Americans, roughly half of the US electorate, has allowed itself to be indoctrinated by the delusion, scorns TRUTH, and has succumbed to the decadence.
President Trump and his supporters believe that the USA has not reached the point of no return, that America can be snatched back from the brink of destruction, saved from the suicidal decadence that has infected Western Civilization.
Pray that they are right!
Pray that they succeed!
Pray that America will be restored to ascendancy!
Pray that those overwhelmed by the groupthink delusion will see TRUTH!
Pray that sanity and TRUTH will be restored in America!

Twenty or so years ago a caller, I think the same guy, would maneuver Rush and Hannity to admitting that out and out lies were being used to advance Leftisim. Then he would softly ask:...and WHO (is the father of) lies, Rush/Sean? Both hosts would then get on their bikes and start pedaling madly away from the then dreaded “E” word (evil). These two conservatives are now openly thundering the E word. Who lies, indeed. Always a very easy question to answer.

This seems to be financial too. The Berent family is up to their ears in financial problems, perhaps including fraud. Probably trying to get sympathetic GoFundMe-type money.
For an excellent depiction of media-manipulated groupthink — verging on mass hysteria — and human nature I recommend the film, Gone Girl. It is has more explicit sex and violence than I prefer in a film, and it (unfortunately) stars Ben Affleck, but boy, does it ever hit the nail on the head.

I'm no prude, but, like you, I'm disgusted by the inappropriate and gratuitous sex and violence in contemporary movies.
I received a compliment recently: My grandson told me that his sister had reprimanded him for encouraging me to use the word "cool"--still common among 11-year-olds--on the grounds that I am too refined for such slang.
I have told them that they can tell me anything and discovered (sometimes to my embarrassment) that my grandson does. I have also explained that I'm perfectly capable of out-cussing anyone; have been everywhere, seen everything, and done damn near everything; and refuse to hide from TRUTH wherever it presents itself, but that I have a personal aversion to sleaze and filth. They seem to have absorbed matters of taste from the examples set by their family.
One thing I loved about my late mother-in-law is that she could discuss anything both frankly and tastefully.
AND there are times when taste should be abandoned altogether, as when William Baxley, Attorney General of Alabama, in a formal letter, said to the Ku Klux Klan: "Kiss my ass." There's no better way to say it.

The syndrome which you describe is very typical of fake hate crimes. I have been keeping an eye on this topic, as I started up a ping list. Rarely is there much fanfare when an incident is found to be fake. All the publicity is given to the original drama.
