When the original Earth Day happened, I was the only kid who rode the school bus that morning. Partly because I didn’t exactly know what day was going to be Earth Day, (it was a Wednesday), and partly because I had a fairly large brass instrument I had to carry to school every day along with my books and stuff.
I watched in amazement the hundreds of kids who were trudging to school, which was roughly two miles from my house, thinking “what are they so worked up about.”
Then, that afternoon, everyone rode the bus home as usual. It struck me as ironic, although I didn’t know that word yet. I turned over in my mind the fact that it had all been “for show,” that nothing had actually changed.
April 22, 1970. The spring of my Freshman year in high school.
Which makes me wonder. If the USA had not murdered over 50 million unborn, what innovations, inventions, cures, works of art, would have been created? I wonder what great people never got a chance to live?
