I realized that recycling doesn't work when I learned that if one non-recyclable item gets mingled with recyclable items in the truck in a way that's not easily extractable,
the entire load goes to the landfill. And this happens probably more than 95% of the time (electronics, light bulbs, batteries, cellophane, wrong plastic, etc.)
It is highly inefficient and cost prohibitive to hire people to comb through every grain of sand on a beach.

Shred the load, then sort by ferrous metals, then go for a density sort to get the non-ferrous metal and/ or glass. Burn the rest.
