McCain always exuded entitlement in his primary runs, then strangely deferred in his 2008 general election run.
Certainly Iraq War exhaustion and the 2008 financial crisis may have meant a Republican did not stand a chance in 2008, but if that is the situation, as the nominee, you need to damage your opponent so they enter the office weakened, to reduce their coat tails, and reduce their ability to implement their policies.
