I must be older than you. When I was growing up,wearing a hat anywhere indoors was bad manners.
Wearing a hat in my grandmother's house would get you a broom across your backside if you weren't quick enough to get back out the door.

We are probably the same age. (I turned 60 today.) Men wearing hats indoors was a no-no: not in school, not in church, not in restaurants, not in public buildings and they took them off at games for the Star Spangled Banner. This is the North so not as strict. My dad was a farmer in my young years so a hat in the house was not a big deal.
