FWIW, I know a couple who spent time in a muslim country and they told me that the women of that country did not want to marry the men of that country because the men beat their wives.

The thumb is roughly an inch so the rule thumb meant that you could use your thumb to get a general idea of the size of something.

A hand is roughly four inches. Which is why horses are measured in "Hands"
