Amen!
This evening it was reported that 3 out of 4 of the beautiful stained glass windows have been destroyed. However, they must have detailed pictures/patterns of these windows and should be able to reproduce them.
With two fires — that sounds quite reasonable.

And the stained glass?
With medieval glass...I don’t think so.
Sweet. Good news
Decision time. Do you:
a) Put your fire crews on a fire where odds are AGAINST containment?, or
b) Put your fire crews in a human chain to take as many relics to safety as possible?
Eh, Im goin wit option B
Thats how I see it. Have been searching for some evidence of planning. The French can be a pain in the cahoolias and they could have anticipated ...
But I can see thane running for the artwork and relics. Isnt that the thing we want to do in a home fire? If we were suited up wed say forget the structure Im going in for the photos.
Glad I visited Notre Dame in 96.
My GF wanted to go to Disneyland Paris instead.
When I saw the first snippet of news on tv, the first thing I said - out loud to myself was - I never saw it.
People have said that today.
We were stationed in Germany. When we travelled we had Catholic sites as goal. There are so many in Europe. This is the most iconic. Was. Aptly dedicated to Our Lady.
Sigh.
I kept thinking I smelled burning wood today. Subconscious, I guess.
In Band of Brothers, when Captain Winters goes to Paris for much needed R&R hes alone, doesnt know what to do with himself. He heads back to his hotel room walking up the steps from the Seine Notre Dame is in the background.
The French have had a lot of practice at saving precious things, starting with 1870, 1914 and 1940. Good for them. At least someone was NOT asleep at the wheel.
Fire prevention in an 800 year old building should be managed and organized like safety at a nuclear power plant or petrochemical plant. I somehow doubt that it was even close.
The tragedy for me today is that they did not care enough. I cant think of any other scenario. Maybe Im wrong
If i had a dollar for every time renovation work led to a towering inferno...
I wouldn’t have much.
CC,the whole thing is starting to feel orchestrated, like watching a theatrical production. Building closed , all people out, no casualties yet almost total destruction of cathedral, all news media in lockstep perfect harmony from the first moment, all soft news about art, history, priests and artistic interviews, “icon” catch word, terrorism not even hinted, Macron leaping to grandstand and emerge from his precarious position to the great savior. Weird too no one, even holy see, mentions our Lady. Just everything oddly and smoothly running like clockwork. ?
People aren’t hearing about the mosque in Jerusalem that was on fire at same time. Which one started first?
Time reporter Hale tweeted priest told him staff think arson.. And he deleted his tweet
I think what a lot of people are missing here is that the fire started in “the attic”.
I doubt much of value was stored there. This ain’t gramma’s house.
The fire took a long time to get downstairs. Fire prefers to go up or sideways to going down.
There was a lot of time to clear the most valuable stuff out of the way. If I had been in charge of the project, I would have started with two teams, one at the altar and/or sacristy, and one under the fire working outwards and then along the long axis.
No doubt lists of the most valued items exist, and people who have dedicated themselves to the care of the building and its contents were consulted.
