One of Dad’s sister ships—I think the Tom Green—took a rocket with a few fatalities. A cook who had bent over to pick up something he dropped had the thing fly over him.
I’m pretty sure another one did take a mine. Many of them had a whole collection of mines by the time they returned to port, but on the whole the anti-mine precautions were pretty good (Dad was a deck officer so I’ve heard stories about this end of things).
While the duty may be bad all round, those who ran a significantly higher risk of being killed or wounded and underwent much more traumatic experiences deserve more in the way of recognition. And Kerry deserves to be keel hauled.

As for the controversy, Dems must pick a sacrificial lamb to go up against Trump. Find somebody at least half credible, and above all else expendable, and get it on. He’s as good as any so far, which isn’t saying much.
