Cathedrals were multi-generational projects and they employed paid, skilled workmen. Guilds, under contracts, hundreds of them, the tasks being passed on from father to son.

The Medieval cathedrals were first monumental-sized architecturally sophisticated, public structures in the history of the world erected by free men and not slaves.
