I think that it’s not a coincidence that it started when it did, at the beginning of Holy Week. And I think the authors of the crime (because there’s no way this was an accident, although the French government will say it was) didn’t want to get bad press for killing a bunch of tourists.
I’ve been there often, and there’s an evening mass, attended by about 50 people usually, and whoever was there would obviously be able to get out in time.
So they didn’t want to get bad press by killing tourists or even daily mass attenders, and went for something that would destroy the structure, which is - whether you are Catholic or Protestant - symbolic of Christianity in Europe.
Buildings, like Notre Dame, represent the rise of the Judeo-Christian Western Culture that re-shaped the world.
It is somewhat fitting that it is lost as Judeo-Christian Western Culture collapses.
